What to Expect at a Dancing Through Parkinson’s class:
While every class is different, we often begin our warm-up sitting in chairs. We progress to moving across the floor together, and finish in a big circle. Our class emphasizes community, inspiration and renewed joy through movement.
We teach a variety of dance forms to encourage stability and balance, increase flexibility, keep your mind limber and leave you feeling inspired.
Friends and family are welcome and encouraged to join in. The class is designed for everyone to dance together. You will be able to move at your own pace and according to your abilities.
Classes are appropriate and enjoyable for people who are able to walk with or without assistance, as well as those with walkers or wheelchairs. Even for standing portions of the class, there is always an equally fun seated option.
Classes are taught by a team of dance teachers trained by the original founders of the Dance for PD® program.
Classes will feature live music by Invertigo musicians to get the energy going!
A wonderful video by the Dance for PD® program:
What participants from Dance for PD® have to say:
"Dance helps me focus."
"I feel more limber, I feel like I have some confidence in the way I move."
“I don’t know if it happens to everyone, but I lose my symptoms when I’m there. And the pleasure of the experience is that it’s not a therapy session. They teach us as if we were any students, and that makes me feel good.”
“After class, I find myself feeling lighter, more present, aware, inspired, hopeful, empowered.”
Dr. James Young:
"Dance therapy has a different effect on patients and in these individuals, it's extraordinary because it's sort of a backdoor into therapy. It allows them to have a certain fluidity in their movements. They're improving in balance, they're improving in their activities of daily living, they're improving socially and also in their attitude toward their life."
--James Young, MD, Rehabilitation Physician, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL
Learn more about Dance for PD®, by the Mark Morris Dance Group/Brooklyn Parkinson Group:
In 2001, BPG and MMDG teamed up to create dance classes for people with Parkinson's, and since then the program has taken off. Their website offers many resources to dancers - with and without PD.
