Jonathan J. Spees, CPA
Mr. Spees is a senior vice president at The Camden Group and specializes in healthcare transactions, including mergers, affiliations, and acquisitions; corporate finance and investment banking; strategic planning; and accounting, reporting, and auditing. He has more than 30 years of experience in healthcare and has worked with academic hospitals, troubled hospitals, rural and urban hospitals, health plans, and all aspects of healthcare financing. Additionally, he has managed over $1 billion in private equity placements, acquisitions, and divestitures during his career.
Most recently, Mr. Spees was chief financial officer for the Keck Medical Center of USC and USC Norris Cancer Hospital (collectively “USC”). There he led the financial planning, analysis, reporting, and financial operations of the multi-facility academic medical center and served on the deal team as financial advisor to USC when it acquired hospitals from Tenet Health System. He also played a key leadership role in USC’s transition into an integrated medical center.
Prior to joining USC, Mr. Spees was senior executive vice president, Corporate Development and Finance, and a Founder of Merit Health Systems, LLC, a hospital management company based in Louisville, Kentucky, which grew from its inception to over $350 million in just over five years.
Prior to founding Merit Health Systems, Mr. Spees served as Managing Member of Abacus Ventures, LLC, and Managing Director of Shamrock Investments, LLC. Both are private investment and investment banking firms specializing in corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions in the healthcare industry.
Mr. Spees has served on the Board of Directors and was Chairman of the Audit Committee of Synthetic Blood International, Inc., a publicly traded company. His other previous roles include Associate Director of Corporate Development for American Medical International, and audit manager and designated healthcare industry specialist for Deloitte, Haskins, & Sells, one of the eight largest public accounting firms worldwide at that time.
Mr. Spees is a Certified Public Accountant. He studied finance and accounting at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota and earned an associate’s degree from University of Wisconsin in Marshfield, Wisconsin.
